Edinburgh to London

It was not an auspicious start to my holiday!  A 4 hours 30 minutes train ride from Edinburgh to London turned into 6 hours and 30 minutes journey.  We'd made good progress until the train got to Peterborough (about 70 miles from London) when the train came to a halt.  Nothing unusual in that - Peterborough is a busy station and sometimes the train has to wait a few minutes while the track clears before it can proceed.  This time things were different, and how!  After several minutes, the guard made an announcement: "Due to signaling problems in th Kings Cross area, there are no trains either going into or coming out of Kings Cross station.  We will keep you informed when we have further information."  We sat there for over an hour, with announcements coming from the guard at regular intervals.  Some of the information was not exactly encouraging.  There was a chance that the train would be terminated before Kings Cross which would have meant me having to use other means to get to Hounslow, in west London, which is where I was booked into a hotel.  Eventually we started rolling and got closer and closer to London.  After passing Hatfield and Potters Bar the train stopped at New Barnet - still a good few miles to Kings Cross!  Again, more announcements.  This time to inform us that Kings Cross station was clogged up with trains and we'd have to wait for an empty platform.  Another 10 minutes went by before we started rolling again.  The train stopped at Finsbury Park - so near yet so far - before finally rolled into Kings Cross station 2 hours late.
Fortunately, my flight is not until 1 pm tomorrow so I can have a relaxed morning before heading to the airport from my hotel.
